The taste of her still coats the back of my tongue, taunting me, driving me mad every time I swallow. She’s the sweetest thing I can remember tasting in either life. Sweeter than honey, sweeter than the first taste of blood after the change. The magic she possesses is staggering and it felt like trying to swallow pure moonlight. It was more than mere feeding. It was a revelation. More exhilarating than a chase, more potent than the best fuck I’ve ever had.

I can’t stop staring at her, though I get a tongue lashing every time she catches me looking. She’s right. She’s not her mother. She’s something new and incredible. Maybe it’s the blood bond, but I’m drawn to her irresistibly, craving her more every day. Her blood, her body, her... everything, really.

“As if she will ever let you fuck her,” Tarquis sneers. “You’re delusional, Payne. Find a whore the second we’re out of this godsforsaken place. Fuck her and then rip her throat out.”

Some part of me cringes away from the idea.

Killing has been a necessity for so long, it’s almost become ubiquitous. I no longer want that to be my reality though. An attempted assassination started this mess and I’m loathe to continue the vicious cycle. Not only because Maura will probably find something unspeakably awful to inflict on me if I continue to slaughter innocents, but because I no longer want to be that man. I thirst for blood, yes, but if I’m ever to escape this constant hungering need within me, I have to act... well... human.

“Milksop.”

“Go away, Tarquis,” I mutter.

He grimaces, but finally vanishes from my sight, gone for now. It’s getting easier to ignore him as we travel. He comes out when my blood lust is high or my need for her grows too great. Odd that the avatar for my base urges is warning me away from her. Maybe my hindbrain is smarter than the rest of me. It knows she’ll probably get me killed.

I can’t scrounge up an ounce of worry to fling at the idea. My mind is too focused on watching her. She’s breathtaking in her mother’s hunting attire. She finds it easier to move in the riding attire than the dresses she ought to be wearing. A short saxe skirt that rides up almost every step, woolen tights to keep the ensemble modest, and calf-high leather boots. A well-cut creme jacket completes the look. The long sleeves keep the cold off her. Mostly. Her nipples still strain the fabric of the teal shirt.

She’s caught me looking again. Damn it.

Her face creases in a scowl as she glowers at me.

“Stop it.”

“You’re walking ahead of me. I can’t not look at you.”

“Oh, bollocks, Payne. You know exactly what you’re doing. You’re a scoundrel.” I suppose a scoundrel is better than a monster. Perhaps I’m moving up in the world.

“And what exactly is it I’m doing, dear Princess?” I snap, my temper getting the better of me. Tarquis’ disembodied snicker sounds in my ears.
